The d’Amico Group

The d’Amico Group, founded in 1952, is a world leader in maritime transportation focusing on the management and operation of dry cargo and product tankers vessels, also providing international shipping services. The talented and dedicated team at The d’Amico Group understands that innovation is key to advancing in a rapidly changing world, which is why they demand the most dynamic and robust tools to optimally manage one of the largest fleets of product tankers, bulk, and container vessels worldwide. “An integrated cloud solution is valuable only if the vendor can adapt quickly to changing customer needs,” explained Nevio Biagini, ICT Manager at d’Amico.

It is this dedication to continuous improvement for long-term success that led d’Amico to Veson’s cloud solution, the Veson IMOS Platform (VIP), in 2019. With over 500+ new client-driven features released annually, VIP is the innovative solution d’Amico sought to future-proof their business and navigate the powerful tides of change transforming the maritime industry and world at large. “Though it is difficult to foresee exactly what challenges and opportunities lie ahead of us, one thing should be retained: only the quickest to adapt will survive,” stated Mr. Biagini. “Having partners like Veson, who have the same dedication to rapid innovation, is of immense value to us.”

Journeying to The Cloud

d’Amico’s journey to the cloud began in 2016, when The d’Amico Group first joined the Veson Nautical community. After years of close collaboration, The d’Amico Group decided to migrate to VIP to benefit from enhanced features, less hardware, less maintenance, and a solution capable of evolving alongside their business needs. “Thanks to Veson’s dedicated services team, our migration to the cloud was a smooth and simple process,” recalled Mr. Biagini.

“Now that we are on VIP, we can be much more efficient,” Mr. Biagini noted. “All of our users can quickly and easily gain real-time visibility into pertinent business operations from wherever they are in the world. Additionally, the number of open issues in the system is at a historical low thanks to our ability to engage with the Veson team in a more streamlined way.”

The d’Amico Group can now easily take full advantage of new and existing features in the system, like customizable dashboards for data visualization and reporting. “Operating on the cloud allows us to adopt new capabilities instantly rather than having to test and implement everything manually, giving us time back in our days to focus on activities more relevant to the business, such as deriving actionable insights from the data.”

With VIP at the center of their business operations, The d’Amico Group’s cloud journey continues on. “Our focus now is to put all our systems on the cloud,” Mr. Biagini explained. “Veson was our first partner with a comprehensive cloud solution, so this pioneering partnership is a kind of model that we are trying to replicate with other vendors.”

An Advanced Solution for Advanced Workflows

The outcomes of migrating to VIP have been beneficial for the entire organization. The ability to easily access and share data both within VIP and with external systems and stakeholders is driving exciting breakthroughs at The d’Amico Group. “A huge amount of data goes in and out of VIP daily,” said Mr. Biagini. “VIP’s advanced functionality and connectivity is what allows us to leverage that data.”

Before VIP, The d’Amico Group struggled to manage paper trades with efficiency and precision as well as gain a full view of the P&L for each voyage. Now, with the Trading & Risk module, bunker swaps, FFAs, and other pertinent data can be linked directly to the voyage P&L for complete visibility and accuracy. “Now that we can see the full picture in real-time, it is much easier to make better decisions, evaluate outcomes, and gather insights that inform future strategy. We plan to expand this long/short evaluation in VIP to not only paper trades, but also cargoes and ships,” explained Mr. Biagini.

d’Amico is also leveraging the connectivity of integrations to further streamline complex workflows and enhance efficiency. “The integration capabilities we have in VIP allow us to send and retrieve business-critical data, such as vessel details, daily market rates and bunker prices, invoices, payments, and more, across multiple systems,” Mr. Biagini said. “I believe we at d’Amico are just at the beginning of tapping into the true potential of these integrations. We have seen that newer generations are more interested in this modern way of retrieving information, and VIP continues to advance in this direction every day.”

Partnering for a Better Future of Shipping

“We are confident that d’Amico will continue to adapt and advance like it has done this past year,” commented Mr. Biagini. “Advancing our partnership with Veson was a crucial step in our continuous digitalization journey, and we look confidently to the future knowing that we will be supported by a solution as dynamic as we are.”

The Veson team is also thrilled to continue growing the relationship with d’Amico. “Veson Nautical and The d’Amico Group share the same innovative spirit,” John Veson commented, “which is what makes us such great partners. We are excited and inspired to collaborate with d’Amico in the years to come.”

As The d’Amico Group looks to the future, they anticipate that collaboration and data sharing will continue its rise in prevalence across the maritime industry. “We are witnessing rapid changes in our world. The world of maritime will need to change as well, as the digitalization of vessels and other physical assets will bring an incredible increase in data exchange and connectivity that will fundamentally transform the way we all operate. As the industry becomes more regulated, integrations and data sharing will only become more valuable and necessary. These changes, though disruptive, will advance us as they have with any other modern-day industry.”
