As maritime organizations navigate an increasingly complex operational environment, robust tools for managing regulatory obligations like EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime have become essential parts of the day-to-day. Within the IMOS Platform, many of our clients have already established effective workflows for emissions data capture, voyage- and contract-level exposure tracking, allowance management, cost allocation, and counterpart billing. These foundational workflows have helped align compliance efforts with commercial operations, enabling teams to manage decarbonization requirements in a way that fits the realities of their business.

In that spirit, we’re excited to share some product enhancements we’ve recently introduced to help make regulatory workflows faster, clearer, and easier to manage. These enhancements reflect one of our ongoing development priorities: to help you handle the commercial impacts of regulations in a way that feels seamless with how you already work.

And there’s more to come —We remain committed to evolving our decarbonization tools in step with the needs of the industry.

IMOS updates for FuelEU

Since FuelEU Maritime came into effect at the beginning of this year, the industry has been integrating a complex blend of emissions reporting, compliance tracking, and performance incentives. As the regulation expands and evolves, flexibility and precision are key. Our latest FuelEU enhancements aim to provide both.

Expanded FuelEU capabilities

To better support compliance strategy development and ease the administrative burden, IMOS now includes:

  • FuelEU Compliance Breakeven Calculation: Helps users simulate the amount of compliant fuel needed to achieve zero balance on a voyage – crucial for cost planning and negotiation in commercial discussions.
  • Improved Lifting Level Emissions Tracking: Allows users to associate lifting-level emissions with fuel grades, auto-calculating WtW values with consistent units.
  • FuelEU Itinerary Overrides: Provide users the flexibility to adjust regulatory assumptions mid-voyage with an editable % compliance column.
  • Wind Reward Factor Integration: Automatically apply FuelEU wind rewards to qualified vessels through vessel settings.

Key Questions:

  1. Are you managing FuelEU requirements within IMOS?
  1. Do you price FuelEU based on compliant fuel costs or simulate compliance breakevens?
  1. Are you looking for a more flexible and scalable way to track emissions and incentives?

IMOS updates for EU ETS

As we’ve seen, the EU ETS regulation introduces operational and accounting complexity, particularly as it intersects with voyage planning, cargo contracts, and allowance management. Our latest updates are designed to reduce friction in EU ETS workflows while ensuring consistency across contract types and financial documentation.

EU ETS cash settlement integration in freight invoices

Historically, emissions costs billed to counterparties often required separate invoicing, introducing the potential risk of inefficiencies and billing delays. With this new enhancement, IMOS users can now:

  • Seamlessly include EU ETS cash settlements in freight invoices, eliminating the need for separate emission invoices.
  • Streamline accounting and reduce fragmentation, especially for those invoicing emissions-related costs under cargo contracts.
  • Enhance payment speed and accuracy through integrated workflows.

Does this solve a challenge you’re facing? Questions to consider:

  1. Do you create freight invoices for voyages subject to EU ETS?
  1. Are you billing cargo-related emissions to third parties?
  1. Are you currently issuing incremental freight invoices for emissions?

EU ETS Settlement Enhancements

The IMOS Platform now supports additional automation and configuration flexibility for EU ETS settlements, allowing users to:

  • Auto-allocate Allowances to open invoices, reducing the manual effort of creating transfer journals.
  • Set default Emission Settlement Types on contracts to ensure consistency across Time Charter In, Head Fixtures, and VC In agreements.
  • Include EU ETS Cash Settlements in Hire Statements and SOA reports, creating a clearer picture for stakeholders.
  • Capture emissions billing directly on Time Charter payments, improving visibility and reducing back-and-forth with counterparties.

Does this solve a challenge you’re facing? Questions to consider:

  1. Are you managing any portion of EU ETS workflows outside of IMOS?
  1. Do you allocate Allowances manually and need a more efficient process?
  1. Would it help your counterparties to see emission settlements reflected on Hire Statements and TC Payments?

Our approach to decarbonization

At Veson, we understand that decarbonization is not just a regulatory necessity, it’s also a strategic initiative for future-proofing the business and taking responsibility for a healthier world. Our solutions go beyond compliance to enable:

  • Holistic emissions tracking, integrated across commercial workflows for both voyage-based and contract-based emissions management.
  • Adaptable compliance support, including configurable tools to manage both current and future regulations with evolving data structures.
  • Data-driven insights into the cost of compliance and the impact of operational decisions on carbon exposure and reporting.

We are continuously expanding our functionality to meet new requirements and better serve our clients’ sustainability strategies. We’re looking to release even more powerful enhancements later this year as we continue building on our decarbonization capabilities.

Voices from the industry: How clients are leading on decarbonization

Client stories help bring these tools and strategies to life. In a recent interview with Marie-Anne Fiorelli of d’Amico, she shared how the IMOS Platform supports the company’s decarbonization efforts by increasing transparency and aligning internal teams around compliance and efficiency goals. “Having a platform that integrates commercial operations with environmental performance gives us the confidence to move forward,” she noted.

Other clients like Opulence Voyage and Navig8 have also shared how they are optimizing workflows to track emissions, model regulatory impact, and optimize voyages for both profit and planet.

Looking ahead

As the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, with recent amendments made to FuelEU and the impending IMO Net-Zero Framework, maritime leaders are requiring solutions that are flexible, scalable, and purpose-built for the future of shipping. At Veson we’re focused on delivering pragmatic, high-impact tools for our users while keeping a long-term view on innovation.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to expand our capabilities – and as always, we value your feedback and ideas as we build what’s next together. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.
