As the maritime industry embarks on its sustainability journey to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% worldwide by 2050, Veson clients have recognized three key steps to achieving their decarbonization goals: establishing emissions data collection methods, building reports that identify areas of improvement, and using the findings to establish benchmarks and execute on the CO2 emissions reduction plan.

The Veson IMOS Platform (VIP) is well positioned to support all three steps and in this blog post we would like to show you how to establish mechanisms in VIP to gather all the necessary data required for emissions reporting so that your organization can successfully create a custom plan to reduce the CO2 emissions

Data Center

The first step is to define all the data points and areas of the business that will be used to collect sustainability insights. The Data Center is the place to set up all necessary metrics and data points that then flow throughout the system.

In the Data Center, users can enter their vessel details, comprising of the deadweight tonnage, its capacity in several metrics depending on the vessel type, and bunker consumption for both In Port and At Sea. This information is then used in estimates to calculate the bunker consumption to help make the most sustainable decisions.

In the Fuel/Lube Types form, users can then record important bunker information including its type, grade, and the CO2 factor that subsequently determines the metric tons of emissions on a voyage leg as well as the total CO2 emitted.

The third part of the emissions setup is the Fuel Zone Configuration. Fuel Zones accommodate for the various Emission Controlled Areas, as well as specific areas where different types of scrubbers are banned from use. VIP provides users with the flexibility to manage both scrubber and non-scrubber fitted fleets.

Configuring information in the Data Center is a one-time set up, and only need be adjusted when large business or regulatory changes occur. In both of these instances, Veson Nautical’s professional services team is here to support you every step of the way.

Chartering and Distances

Once the data is set up and ready to be used, charterers can then use the distances tool to visually estimate and evaluate the potential routes of the next business by entering two or more voyages for side-by-side comparison:

To see a more granular calculation of the CO2 emissions, TCE comparison, and other financial metrics, users can proceed to create multiple estimates. In an example below we use two routes from the same origin, but with a different destination:

Every estimate includes the CO2 emitted column that is broken down by the voyage leg:

Furthermore, users can analyze the laden and ballast speed to determine the most optimal bunker expense and CO2 consumption outcome in the Speed Comparison Analysis tool:

This tool helps our users best estimate their business according to the most important financial as well as fuel consumption and emissions metrics based on the consumption data recorded in the vessel details.

Operations and Veslink Voyage Reporting

As voyage estimates are fixed, the information then flows to the operators to manage the vessels based on monitoring guidelines and further dictate the voyages in accordance with the best suited sustainability tactics. In the voyage manager tool, users can carefully account for fuel consumption data that is directly received from the vessel on a daily Noon Report basis. Veslink Voyage Reporting is a ship to shore communication method that allows captains to fill out the necessary voyage details and inform the operators of the positions and fuel consumption information and other important operational details.

The fuel data consumption figures are stored in VIP and used to calculate the CO2 emissions on a leg by leg basis as well as provide a whole overview of the voyage. The newly introduced Sustainability tab combines the most important sustainability metrics and displays them in a convenient manner:

From here, users are able to capture and adjust the next voyage leg and inform the Captains of the next best decision according to the VIP projections regarding their sustainability goals.

Analytics

Once the voyage is complete, users have the ability to generate already pre-defined vessel performance reports as well as EEOI reports based on the vessel and fleet information. The data stored throughout the system is also available to be used in the Report Designer to build compliant reports such as the EU MRV and IMO DCS. Further, the data can be used for analysis in already established business intelligence tools, such as Power BI, to identify areas of improvement and expand your decarbonization strategy.
